Detroit totaled a 597 (299-298) in the 36-hole tournament, which was shortened by one round yesterday due to weather. The Titans finished ahead of such national programs as the host Hoyas, DePaul and St. John's, all out of the BIG EAST.
Byrne carded a 144, shooting a one-over 72 in both rounds of the tournament to finish in a tie for second, just one stroke behind the individual champion Hank Frame of Washington State.
“This was a good finish to the fall,” said Engel. “Dave really was steady all season and he did another good job to lead us.”
In four fall tournaments, Byrne finished runner-up twice and tied for third on two other occaisons.
