Byrne Up Close:
Established himself as one of the premier golfers in the Horizon League over the last three years... With a year to go, he’s already one of just three Titans who have been selected all-league on three occasions, joining Johnny Strawser and former teammate Mark Sommerfeld… Has finished among the first four at the conference championship three straight years, with a victory in 2007… Team captain… Has cracked the Top 50 in the Canadian Men's Amateur rankings each of the last two years... Has posted 21 sub-par rounds and 15 Top 10 finishes in three seasons as a Titan... Received the 2009 UDM Titan Club Award for academic and athletic excellence and was named an All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America…
Last Season:
Led the Titans with a 73.3 stroke average and was their top finisher at five tournaments… Closed out the year in style, winning the Detroit Titans Invitational to end the regular season before tying for fourth place at the Horizon League Championship en route to his third straight berth on the All-Tournament Team… Posted eight Top 20 finishes – five of them in the Top 10 – in nine events last year… Had a season-low round of 68 at DePaul’s John Dallio Memorial, where he finished third individually… Posted a 54-hole low of 214 twice, at DePaul as well as Detroit’s own invitational…
As A Titan:
Was second in the Horizon League with a 73.0 scoring average in his second college season… Finished among the Top 5 in five tournaments as a sophomore, including runner-up at DePaul’s John Dallio Memorial and fourth at the HL Championships… Set a personal 54-hole low of 206 (66-68-72) as the Titans won a second straight team title at the IPFW Fall Classic… Was voted 2007 Newcomer of the Year and All-Horizon League by the conference coaches as a freshman... Was the lone HL golfer to win twice individually in 2006-07 – capturing the IPFW Fall Classic and the Horizon League Championship – while leading UDM to team titles at both events... Set the 18-hole school scoring record with a 65 in the first round at IPFW en route to medalist honors... Posted a three-stroke victory at the HL Championship, firing an even-par 216… Ended up second on the team with a 74.7 stroke average... Was voted UDM’s Newcomer of the Year (all sports) for 2006-07…
Personal:
Has compiled an outstanding record in summer play since joining the Titans… Has become the first player ever to win three Ontario Men’s Match Play Championships, and he’s done it three years in a row (2007-08-09)… Also captured the 2009 Ontario Champion of Champions and Western Ontario Amateur crowns while finishing ninth at the Ontario Am and 29th at the Canadian Am last summer… In 2008, in addition to his Ontario Match Play title, was sixth at the Ontario Amateur, fourth at the Ontario Champion of Champions and 23rd at the Canadian Am… Also reached match play at the North and South Amateur while winning a local qualifier by five strokes to play in his first U.S. Amateur… Was ranked 44th nationally by the RCGA… Was ranked second among all men’s amateurs in Ontario in 2008 after taking the top spot in ’07… Won the Brantford Invitational, while finishing runner-up at the Ontario Amateur, in 2007... The latter performance earned him a spot on the four-man team which represented Ontario at the Canadian Amateur, Byrne’s first appearance at his national championship... There, he qualified in stroke play and won two matches to reach the Round of 16 before being ousted by Michael Knight, the eventual runner-up... Ranked 23rd on the RCGA Men’s Order of Merit at summer 2007’s end... Byrne is another product of southwest Ontario’s Burger King Junior Tour to join the UDM roster, following in the footsteps of past tour stars and former Titans Dave Dragich and Chris Hicks... Tied for eighth at the 2006 Ontario Junior Tournament of Champions, 10th at the Ontario Junior and 18th at the Future Links Ontario Championship... Came to the forefront as a young golfer when he earned a berth in the 2004 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship – held at famed the Olympic Club in San Francisco – by winning the local qualifier held in nearby West Bloomfield... Also won the 2004 City of Windsor Championship… A year later, he finished 13th at the Ontario Junior Championship, and 33rd at the Canadian Junior… Four-time MVP of his high school golf team, and won the 2005 SWOSSA individual championship... His uncle, Matt St. Louis, played golf at the University of Windsor... Served as Vice-President of UDM’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in 2008-09… Majoring in Education...
