Women's lacrosse made its UDM varsity debut on Saturday afternoon and what a first game it was, as the Titans blasted Howard, 20-1, in Washington, DC.
Nine different Titans scored in the rout of the Bison (0-2) as freshman Anna Eidem (Champlin, MN / Totino-Grace) led the way with six goals, while Emily Boissonneault (Brooklin, ON / Donald A. Wilson) tacked on five for UDM. Kandice Bogatz (Staten Island, NY / Curtis) added three on the afternoon, while Alyssa Shaver (Flint, MI / Carman-Ainsworth) also dented the net more than once with two goals.
Boissonneault scored the initial goal of the game – and first in UDM's lacrosse history – at the 28:30 mark of the opening half.
Detroit led 13-0 at intermission, and only a score by Sakita Holley at the 29:14 mark of the second stanza kept Titan freshman goalie Brett Yenger (Cincinnati, OH / Sycamore) from registering a shutout in her first college game, however, Yenger did collect nine saves for the Titans.
“We did some great things today at Howard,” coach Mary Ann Meltzer said. “It was a fantastic start to the inaugural season and it gives the athletes confidence going into our game tomorrow at Navy.
“Our transition went really well today and Brett did a great job of clearing the ball. The attack also did a good job in getting the ball back before it got back to the defensive end.”
After Sunday's game at Navy, the Titans will return to Detroit for their home opener next Saturday against Niagara (11:00 a.m. at Titan Field).
