Box Score
The Detroit Titans men's basketball team put up a tough fight, but a key second-half run by Milwaukee proved to be the difference as UDM fell to the Panthers, 68-63, on Saturday evening.
Junior
Woody Payne (Inkster, MI/Ypsilanti) was the high man for Detroit with 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Senior
Michael Harrington (Country Club Hills, IL/Rich Central) and junior
Eulis Stephens (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) added nine points, while junior
Thomas Kennedy (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) netted eight.
Detroit (7-22, 2-16 HL) trailed by 11, 64-53, when the red, white and blue staged a late comeback, outscoring the Panthers 7-1 over the next 30 seconds to get to 65-60. Harrington started the spurt with an offensive rebound and a put back. After Milwaukee (16-13, 11-7 HL) hit a free throw, freshman
Donavan Foster (Chicago, IL/Currie) went inside for a lay up as he was fouled, converting on the attempt for the old fashioned three-point play.
A Panther turnover gave UDM the ball back where, once again, Foster connected on a basket and Detroit was within five with 24 seconds to go. Unfortunately, the Panthers were able to hit their free throws down the stretch to earn the victory.
The Titans got to that point after a Milwaukee 14-4 run midway through the second half had UDM down by double-digit advantage, 56-44.
Neither team had much of an advantage in the first half. Milwaukee scored the first five points of the game, but UDM quickly answered with 13 straight to jump out in front. A 13-6 Panthers' run midway through the first tied the game at 19 with nine minutes to go. From there, both teams battled with UDM once again knotting the score at 25, before heading into the half down by five, 32-27.
Before the game the team honored its three seniors in
Tryl Hartfield (Wyoming, MI/Rogers),
Chris Hayes (Chicago IL/Mt. Carmel) and Harrington for their hard work and dedication to the program.
The Titans will now await their opponent for the Horizon League Tournament, set to begin on Tuesday, Mar. 3. UDM will either play at Cleveland State or at Wright State with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m. If Wright State loses to Green Bay tonight, Detroit will head to Cleveland, but a Wright State win will have UDM head to Dayton. Even a WSU win could still have the red, white and blue in Cleveland if Youngstown State falls to Valparaiso due to tiebreakers.
