Harris Nets First Titan Goal As UDM Opens Up Lacrosse Era

Box Score

A new chapter in UDM athletics started on Saturday as the men's lacrosse team began its collegiate program in Columbus against national powerhouse Ohio State, falling to the Buckeyes 21-1 at the Woody Hayes Athletics Center.

"We knew the challenge we had coming down here playing a great team like Ohio State,” said head coach Matt Holtz. “Despite the score, we played hard and this game really shows us where we need to get as a program. We showed great effort out there and we just need to continue to improve."

Freshman Scott Harris (Saline, MI/Saline) got Detroit on the board for the program's first ever goal, finding the back of the net with just under two minutes left in the game. Senior Michael Schumacher (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Central) was credited with the assist, firing a pass to Harris that he was able to get by OSU goalie Ryan Keneally.

Detroit was able to get off 38 shots on the day, while scooping up 17 ground balls. Senior Pat O'Shea was one of the main Titan offense attackers, tallying eight shots on the day, with four on goal. Freshman Vince Wigdahl (Apple Valley, MN / Apple Valley) had seven shots, while Schumacher added six shots. Junior Vince Diana (Massillon, OH / Jackson) started in goal recording five saves in 37 minutes, while freshman Mike Lioi (Bel Air, MD / Archbishop Curley) played 23 minutes stopping three shots.

UDM kept the explosive Ohio State offense off the board through the first five minutes of play, but the Buckeyes eventually took a 1-0 lead at the 9:25 mark. The Buckeyes then broke the game open with four goals in a two-minute span to go out in front 5-0 at the end of the first period. OSU would go on to take a 12-0 lead into the half.

Detroit returns to action next Saturday when the Titans travel to Louisville, KY, to face Bellarmine. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
