Sophomore
Earnest Cleary (Detroit, MI/Ferndale) won the 100-meter dash as the Detroit Titans wrapped up the final day of competition at the Horizon League Championships on Sunday. UDM finished fifth in the league meet totaling 46 points.
“We had a tough meet on the men's side,” said head coach
Guy Murray. “Unfortunately, we got to feel like other sports and were on the short end of a bad call on the 4x100m and our luck didn't improve much from there. We ran okay in spots, but we had very high hopes. We are young and will be back so hopefully we will learn and work hard to improve.”
Cleary, who was runner-up in the 100m last year taking second to Milwaukee's Tyler Bucholz in 11.03, took home his first career conference title winning the race in 10.85, just ahead of Bucholz's 10.86. With the win, Cleary earned first team All-Horizon League honors as well as an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional Championships.
“A big win for Earnest as he has been running on high level all season and ran well to hold off some good guys today,” added Murray.
Junior
Deonte Osayande (Detroit, MI/Wingate) also tallied points in the event taking fourth in 11.17.
Cleary was also part of a trio of Titans that scored in the 200m finishing sixth with a new PR of 22.09. Freshman
Vushaun Landrum (Windsor, ON/Sandwich Secondary) was the top Titan earning fourth in 21.82, while sophomore
Lesley Hanna (Exuma, Bahamas/Coakley) finished fifth with a career best time of 21.86 becoming just the fifth Titan to break 22 in the race.
“The times were good in the 200, but the Milwaukee guys got after it,” commented Murray. “Landrum did a nice job to bounce back from a couple of tough breaks early, while Hanna climbed to No. 4 and Cleary moved to sixth on the all-time record list.”
Hanna nearly recorded a victory in the 400m finishing third with a time of 47.82, just .34 seconds away from second and .71 seconds out of first.
Hanna then posted a time of 46.4 as he anchored the 4x400-meter relay squad, composed of senior
Eric Christy (St. Clair, MI/St. Clair) and juniors
Alex Gould (Comstock Park, MI/Comstock Park) and
Sam Jones (Detroit, MI/U-D Jesuit), to a fourth place finish in 3:16.07, a time that now stands seventh in UDM annals.
“Lesley ran fast, but ran into a Milwaukee team that really peaked at the right time,” said Murray. “He has done a great job to overcome the lost time from his injury at the start of outdoor. The split was the fastest in school history is a very good sign of things to come.”
Freshman
Aviram Campbell (Yale, MI/Yale) took fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.43, while just missing out on scoring in the 400mH placing seventh in a new personal best 56.48.
Sophomore
Pat Liederbach (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) also nearly came away with two scores settling for sixth in the 5000m in 15:01.24 and seventh in the 1500m with a 3:57.42.
Senior
Adam Mayhew (Richland, MI/Gull Lake) continued his strong weekend by scoring in his fourth event with a throw of 14.63m in the shot put to claim sixth. On the weekend, Mayhew earned 10 points by taking third in the hammer, fifth in the discus and sixth in the javelin and shot put.
The Titans will be in action next week, May 8-9, as Detroit heads to Ann Arbor to compete in the Len Paddock Invitational.
