Led by two golfers who finished in the top 10 in senior
David Byrne (Essex, ON/Essex) and junior
Britt Pronk (London, ON/St. Thomas Aquinas), the Detroit Titans made up strokes on the field for the second straight round en route to taking second place at the John Dallio Memorial tournament, hosted by DePaul at Ruffled Feathers Golf Club in Lemont, IL.
UDM posted the second best score in the final round (304) to race past Western Illinois for second, finishing the three-round event with an 898 (305, 289, 304). The host Blue Demons bested the 16-team field shooting an 880.
Byrne, who earned third place last week at Michigan State's Spartan Classic, ended the day in a three-way tie for second, carding a two-over 218 (78-66-74).
Pronk kept up his steady play, posting a four-over 220 (72-73-75) to finish tied for sixth, in part by making a tournament-best 41 pars, while freshman
Simon Reyers (Kingston, ON /Holy Cross) took a share of 15th with a three-round score of 228 (77-75-76).
"We got off to a slow start Monday, but never gave up and kept moving up through the standings. We really made a run at DePaul through the first nine today," coach
Mark Engel said. "Final round conditions were really tough, what with the (20-30 mph) wind and the severity of the pin locations. Like last week, we beat a bunch of good teams, this time from conferences like the Big East and Atlantic-10, and we'll build on that as we head into Illinois State."
The Titans will have a week off before heading back to the state of Illinois for its next tournament, the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate, held from Oct. 11-12.
