Titans Post Second Straight Shutout

Box Score

DETROIT -- The men's soccer team picked up a big Horizon League win with a 2-0 tally over Cleveland State on Friday night. The Titans have won six of their last eight contests, and are now 4-2 in league action.

Ya Ya Toure (Ypsilanti, Mich./Willow Run) scored his sixth goal of the season against the Vikings to give UDM the 1-0 advantage in the first half. Toure attacked a ball that was heading for the goalkeeper. After taking possession of the ball the keeper was out of place giving Toure the wide open net. The junior placed the ball in the bottom left corner to give Detroit (6-6-1) the early lead.

Sam Seppo (Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron) put the game away with a goal just before the 80 minute mark. Seppo lined up on the far side of the field on the Detroit throw in. Adam Bedell (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) launched the ball to midfield, and Seppo did the rest to give Detroit the 2-0 victory. Seppo now has four goals on the season, and Bedell leads the team with five assists.

“Conference wins are what we play for, and this was another team victory for us,” said head coach Nicholas Deren. “To get that win today against a very well organized, very well coached team is a great accomplishment.”

The Titans have now posted back-to-back shutouts. Brandon Waterstradt (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) has been the goalkeeper for both of them. The sophomore has played great since recovering from an injury early in the season. Waterstradt is now 6-1 as the Titan goalkeeper. He made two saves against the Vikings on Friday night.

“I'm extremely proud of our guys for putting another shutout together,” Deren added. “Our defensive shape today was very good. We didn't allow penetration, and we were organized out there. With everyone in the right spots we were tough to break down, and our goalkeeper led that charge. He kept everyone focused on the task at hand, and I give Brandon a lot of credit for that.”

The Titans next challenge will be against IPFW this Sunday. The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m., and is part of a UDM soccer doubleheader with the women playing Butler at 1:00 p.m.

“We have a big game here on Sunday against one of our rivals,” Deren explained. “You can throw out the records because every time we play against them it is a battle.”
