Detroit is currently tied for sixth in the Horizon League at 7-8 and is 15-12 overall on the year. UDM is still alive a home playoff game in the HL tournament. The Titans lost two tough games last week at home and will look to rebound against a team that came away with a 61-59 decision in Calihan Hall in January. Sophomore
Chase Simon continues to lead the team in scoring at 14.9 points per game, while sophomore
Eli Holman is coming off a monster game that saw him corral a career-high 18 rebounds and score 13 points for his eighth double-double of the season.
Wright State is 17-9 and 10-5 in the conference, where they sit in second place. The Raiders actually control their own destiny to hold on to second and earn the No. 2 seed in the HL tournament if they were to win their final three conference games. WSU has won six of its last seven, with its only loss at Butler. Vaughn Duggins leads the team at 14.7 ppg., while Todd Brown is averaging 13.1 ppg. Known for being a good defensive team, the Raiders lead the league in scoring defense allowing just 60.5 ppg.
DETROIT VS. WRIGHT STATE
Detroit has a slight edge in the overall series, 19-18, but Wright State has won eight in a row and nine of the last 10 meetings. The last UDM triumph over WSU was on Feb. 8, 2006, 70-66 in Calihan Hall.
The Titans are 7-10 all-time against the Raiders on the road and have dropped the last six meetings. Detroit's last win came at the Nutter Center on Feb. 11, 2004, 74-60.
THE GLASSMAN
Sophomore
Eli Holman posted his eighth double-double of the season his last time out against Milwaukee. Holman scored 13 points and pulled down a career-best 18 rebounds.
The boards are the most by a player in the Horizon League this season and tied for the seventh most in the nation.
It is the second single-game statistic this season that Holman leads the conference in as his six blocks, a mark he has reached twice.
A HELPING TITAN
Senior
Woody Payne tallied his first career double-digit assist game with a career-high 11 helpers against Milwaukee.
The 11 assist is just one shy of the HL single game high this year, held by Loyola's Courtney Stanley.
He was also the first Titan to go over 10 assists since Brandon Bell had 11 against Milwaukee on Jan. 25, 2007.
TITANS AMONG NCAA LEADERS
As of the latest NCAA statistics, released on Feb. 15,
Eli Holman is 17th in blocked shots per game (2.6) and 65th in rebounding (8.6 rpg.), while
Woody Payne is 15th in the country in steals with 2.6 per contest.
As a team, Detroit ranks in the top 75 in four areas. The Titans are 48th in three-point field goal percentage defense, allowing just 30.9 percent from the outside, 54th in rebounding margin (4.2), 59th in field goal percentage (46.0%) and 75th in steals per game (7.8).
CASE FOR NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
As the season winds down and post-season honors are just around the corner, sophomore
Chase Simon is doing his part to be considered for the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year as well as on the All-League team.
Overall, Simon ranks sixth in scoring (14.9), and is tied for 12th in rebounding (5.4). He has two double-doubles and seven games of 20+ points, including two 30-point games with a career-high 33 at Milwaukee, the third-highest scoring output this season and the highest in league play. His 15 made field goals at Milwaukee also tops the conference.
Also in conference action, Simon leads his HL peers in scoring at 16.7 ppg., and is eighth in rebounding at 5.9 per contest.
