Titans Falter On The Road At Wright State

Box Score

(No Post-Game Press Conference)

Detroit silenced the crowd in the first half, but a Wright State run in the second proved to be the difference as the Titans fell on the road to the Raiders, 70-53, on Wednesday night.

Sophomore Chase Simon (Detroit, MI/Community) led the team with 13 points, while junior Xavier Keeling (Huntsville, AL/J.O. Johnson) added 11. Sophomore Eli Holman (Richmond, CA/Richmond) totaled nine points, eight rebounds and two blocks and senior Eulis Stephens (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) came off the bench to net seven.

Detroit (15-13, 7-9 HL) looked like it was going to take this one as it twice overcame a deficit to take a lead into the half. Down by six, 11-5, the Titans went on a 7-0 run to jump out in front by one. Holman started the spurt with a layup and Simon followed with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws.

Wright State (18-9, 11-5 HL) would regain the lead and extend it all the way to eight, 27-19, until UDM slowly started to cut that down. Detroit got it to five, 29-24, on a Keeling basket and, after a steal by Simon, Stephens got inside for the old fashioned three-point play on a layup and free throw to trim it to two.

The Titans were able to force a Wright State miss on its possession and two from the charity stripe by Holman would knot the score at 29 with 2:15 left. The Raiders answered with a basket of their own, but Simon's jumper with a minute to go and a trey by senior Woody Payne (Inkster, MI/Ypsilanti) as time was running down put the red, white and blue on top at the intermission, 34-33.

The lead was short lived as the Raiders were able to keep the Titans' offensive attack off balanced in the second, holding UDM to five points in the first 11 minutes of play as they raced out to a double-digit lead.

UDM will now step out of conference as the Titans play in-state rival Eastern Michigan in a BracketBusters game on Saturday. Game time is slated for 3:35 p.m., and is part of a Detroit doubleheader as the women host Valparaiso at 1:00 p.m.

The game for the men will also be Senior Day as UDM honors its four seniors prior to the start of its contest.
