In the first National Lacrosse Conference game of the 2010 campaign for both teams, Detroit (1-1, 0-1 NLC) was edged by Davidson, 15-12, at Richardson Stadium in Davidson, NC, Wednesday evening.
Sophomore
Corina Mahorn (Whitby, ON/Anderson CVI) led UDM in scoring with three goals, while sophomore
Anna Eidem (Champlin, MN/Totino-Grace) and freshman
Lindsey Saunders (Pasadena, MD/Northeast) each added two for the Titans.
Eidem opened up the scoring for Detroit just three minutes into the contest to tie the game at one and then netted her second goal exactly five minutes later off an assist from freshman
Zaynib Hamze (Dublin, CA/Dublin) to pull Detroit within one, 3-2. Mahorn soon netted her first goal at the 18:26 mark, which cut the Wildcats lead to just one again (4-3). Davidson then went on to score six consecutive goals, but Detroit added two more before halftime. However, the Wildcats (1-1, 1-0 NLC) had an 11-5 advantage at the break.
The Titans outscored Davidson, 7-4, in the second stanza, which included three straight Detroit goals from three different players late in the game in sophomore
Emily Boissonneault (Brooklin, ON/Donald A. Wilson Secondary), Mahorn and Hamze.
Detroit sophomore
Brett Yenger (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) collected 11 saves on the evening, while allowing 15 goals in 60 minutes of action. Michelle Pav also was in net the entire contest for Davidson and tallied seven saves, while allowing 12 Detroit goals.
The game was fairly even as Davidson only had a 34-32 advantage in shots and Detroit collected 22 ground balls to the Wildcats' 21.
The Titans will return to action when they face Presbyterian in Clinton, SC, on Friday at 3 p.m.
