Matthews Scores Four Goals As Titans Fall To Lehigh

Box Score

Freshman Joel Matthews (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross Secondary) ran his goal total on the year to 17 with four more markers and the Titans played even with Lehigh in two quarters, but a slow start was just too much to overcome as Detroit dropped a 21-9 decision to the Mountain Hawks on a cold and rainy Monday afternoon in Bethlehem, Pa.

Matthews got the four goals on just seven shots. He also added an assist and now has 21 points on the season.

Sophomore Scott Harris (Saline, MI/Saline) netted a goal and had a helper, while sophomore Brad Janer (Novi, MI/Detroit Catholic Central) and freshmen Tyler Staruch (Brighton, MI/Brighton), Tyler Corcoran (South Lyon, MI/South Lyon) and Chris Nemes (Novi, MI/Detroit Catholic Central) all found the back of the net.

Down 5-0 entering the second, Detroit (0-5) got back in the game with two quick scores in the opening minutes as sophomore John Nowicki (Clinton Twp., MI/De La Salle Collegiate) found Harris and he ripped one past the goalkeeper. Nearly two minutes later, Matthews took a pass from junior Tim Lehto (Farmington, MI/North Farmington) and sent one between the pipes.

After two straight Lehigh (3-4) markers, Corcoran came up with his first collegiate goal as the rookie won the face-off and then streaked towards the keeper, beating him one on one.

The Titans fought back with three straight goals to put the score at 9-6 with just two minutes to go in the second quarter. Janer started the spurt with his first goal of the season at the 2:49 mark. Just 30 seconds later, Matthews began a streak of his own with two goals in 37-second span.

From there, the home team ran off five straight to open a sizable lead, but Detroit never gave up as the red, white and blue put together another three-goal run to get within five, 14-9, in the third. Nemes started the outburst with his fourth marker of the year as this time Matthews was the playmaker, setting up his freshman teammate.

Staruch then tallied Detroit's first man-down goal of the season and Matthews put the finish on the charge with his fourth score, but that was as close as UDM could get.

Penalties played a big part in the game as the teams combined for 26 infractions, with Detroit whistled for 15. The Titans held off Lehigh for the most part in the extra-man opportunities as the Mountain Hawks were blanked for their first five advantages before getting three tallies in the fourth. Detroit also forced 19 turnovers on the day.

UDM will now get ready for it's first-ever MAAC contest as the Titans travel to New York to face Manhattan College on Saturday. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Gaelic Park.
