Making their fifth post-season appearance in the last 10 years, the Horizon League champion Titan men's golfers open NCAA Central Regional play at Notre Dame tomorrow morning.
The first UDM golfer will head to the tee at 9:40 a.m. at Notre Dame's 7,020-yard, par-70 Warren Golf Club. Golfstat.com will provide live scoring throughout the 54-hole tournament, with 18 holes being played each of the next three days.
Detroit will face 13 other teams and five individual competitors at Notre Dame. The top five teams from each of the six Regionals, as well as the top individual not on an advancing team, will move on to the NCAA Championship in Chattanooga, June 1-5.
The Central Regional field is loaded with talent, including one team from the Pac-10, top-seeded Stanford, as well as two from the SEC, four from the ACC and four more from the Big Ten. Nine of the entrants are ranked in the nation's Top 50 by Golfstat.
“The competition is going to be stiff. There are as many good teams at the Central Regional as there are anywhere this week. But we've been playing tough teams and tough golf courses all year and I think that will help,” 20th-year head coach Mark Engel said. “The guys will be ready.”
UDM will field a lineup that includes two seniors, Horizon League Player of the Year David Byrne (Essex, ON/Essex) and Brian Sparks (Shelby Township, MI/Lutheran North), who played at the NCAA West Regional in 2007, and their experience will be of value. A pair of juniors – Jeff Clarridge (Barrie, ON/Bear Creek) and All- League honoree Britt Pronk (London, ON/St. Thomas Aquinas) – and freshman Simon Reyers (Kingston, ON/Holy Cross) will round out the Titans' starting five. It's the same lineup which won the 2010 Horizon League Championship last month by a six-stroke margin over runner-up Green Bay.
This marks the second time the Warren GC has hosted an NCAA Regional and the Titans were there in 2005, too.
