The University of Detroit Mercy has announced the hiring of
Mitch Wigness to its Sports Information Director post. Wigness, a graduate of Eastern Michigan University, comes to UDM after five years at the University of Indianapolis.
“We had a tremendous pool of applicants for this position, and during our search it became clear that Mitch would be a terrific fit for Detroit Titan Athletics,” said
Keri Gaither, Director of Athletics. “He is joining our staff at a pivotal time, a time during which we are expanding our television package, and a time during which we are going to experience an increased level of media coverage for Titan Basketball. We look forward to having Mitch on board. I'm confident he and our sports information staff will hit the ground running.”
During his stint with UIndy, Wigness was involved with the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Final Four held in Indianapolis as part of the media relations team. He coordinated the efforts for 19 UIndy varsity sports and helped host a number of NCAA Regionals and Championships.
He helped develop the UIndy Television Network which airs all Greyhound football home games and select basketball doubleheaders. The broadcasts are available to 350,000 homes throughout the state of Indiana and football is aired live in the metro area.
Wigness spent his previous three years at the University of North Dakota. As an Assistant Director of Media Relations, he worked primarily with the Fighting Sioux football, basketball and volleyball teams. He also served as an editor for Sioux Illustrated, a bi-monthly publication produced by the athletic media relations office and the Ralph Engelstad Arena production staff. In addition, he hosted a pre-game show prior to all home men's hockey broadcasts.
He previously was a Sports Information Assistant at Saginaw Valley State University during the 2001-02 season. Wigness earned his bachelor's degree in telecommunications and film from EMU in 2000.
