DETROIT-- Cleveland State nearly let a 14-point lead slip, but hung on for a 66-61 win over Detroit at Calihan Hall Saturday afternoon. The Titans sliced the lead down to three, but a big three-pointer by Jeremy Montgomery helped seal the win for the Vikings.
Detroit (3-6, 0-2 Horizon League) got off to a slow start as CSU (8-1, 2-0 HL) held the Titans off the board until the 16:28 mark. With the score 12-4 CSU, Jason Calliste was fouled on a long three-pointer with the shot clock expiring. He missed the final of three free throws, but Doug Anderson made a heads-up play to knock the ball off a CSU player. Donavan Foster then hit a jumper to make it a four-point possession for Detroit, springboarding a 10-0 run.
The lead changed hands six times and was tied on seven more occasions in the first half, but the Vikings took a 37-31 lead at halftime, turning Detroit over a dozen times.
The CSU advantage mounted to 14 points as the Titans started 0-for-11 from three-point range in the contest. Calliste broke the spell with a triple from the wing and Ray McCallum converted a layup to key a 13-2 run that shrunk the lead down to a single possession. The Titans held CSU without a field goal for nearly six-and-a-half minutes to jump back into it.
Anderson's fastbreak dunk wound up being the final points in the run before Montgomery's three-pointer from up top with 2:17 on the clock proved to be the clincher.
Chase Simon, who came in as the league's leading scorer, was held to just six points on 2-of-5 shooting. Anderson led all players with 17 points and added five rebounds. McCallum chipped-in 14 while Calliste added 11 for Detroit. CSU got 12 apiece from Montgomery and Tim Kamczyc.
Detroit will host St. John's on Monday and will officially dedicate its new floor to former head coach and athletic director Dick Vitale in a pregame ceremony. The ceremony is set to begin at 6:15 p.m. with the tip at 7:05 p.m. on ESPN2.
Notes: Senior Eli Holman returned to team activities and was on the bench for the game but did not play ... LaMarcus Lowe, who came into the game ranked 14th in the NCAA in blocks per game, had three ... he has at least two blocks in every game this season.
