Women's Lacrosse Officially Kicks off 2011 Season

(Final Box Score)

DETROIT – The women's lacrosse team played its home and season opener in a little bit of snow and brisk weather at Titan Field earlier today as guest Canisius walked away with a 17-6 road win.

Three Titans had multiple goals in the contest as junior Anna Eidem (Champlin, MN/Totino-Grace) netted the first goal of the season for Detroit at 17:55 of the first half with a free position shot.

Last year's leading goal scorer, junior Emily Boissonneault (Brooklin, ON/Donald A. Wilson Secondary) also scored a pair of goals for the Titans and sophomore Erin Campbell (Orangeville, ON/Orangeville District Secondary) chipped in with a pair of her own tallies for Detroit.

Canisius jumped out to a 7-1 lead early, but Detroit responded with a pair of goals from Campbell and Boissonnneault.

The Golden Griffins added three more before Boissonnneault would get her second of the day for Detroit.

”We need to work with our attack. We got some shots off, but we only got one attempt and didn't get those second and third attempts. Loose balls and getting draw control stopped our feet a lot,” said Titan head coach Mary Ann Meltzer.

Sophomore Marybeth Flanagan (Lansing, MI/Waverly) tended the nets for Detroit making eight saves on the day.

“I feel we tried some new things and some things to work out, but we definitely have some things to work on and for our first game overall we had a nice little feel playing and hopefully we'll continue to get better,” added Eidem whose second goal came 8:22 into the second half.

The Titans will be in action again next weekend on Sunday as they will host UC Davis with game time set for 11:00 a.m.
