POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team used a spirited fourth-quarter charge to get back in the game, but the Titans just could not recover from a slow start as UDM fell on the road to Marist, 14-13, on Saturday.
“I liked the way our team never gave up,” said head coach Matt Holtz. “They came out and took control of the game and twice we were able to get back to within one goal, but we were just not able to get the tying goal.”
The loss drops Detroit to 5-9 overall and 4-2 in the MAAC, where the Titans will be the No. 3 seed in next week's conference tournament. Marist improves to 8-6, 4-2 in the league as the Red Foxes get the No. 2 seed setting up a rematch between the two teams in the semifinals.
The Titans were led by freshman
Tom Masterson (London, ON/St. Thomas Aquinas CCS), who notched not only his first point of the season, but his first hat trick ending the day with three goals and two assists. Freshman
Shayne Adams (St. Catharines, ON/Denis Morris) posted his fifth hat trick of the season, while junior
Tim Lehto (Farmington, MI/North Farmington) had two goals and an assist.
The Titans trailed 14-8 with under nine minutes to go when they scored five straight goals in a six-minute span to get within one. Masterson started the scoring with his third goal of the game at the 8:54 mark. Detroit then scored back-to-back goals seven seconds apart as junior
Ty Maruyama (Lakewood, CO/Green Mountain) notched his sixth goal of the year and, following sophomore
Brandon Davenport's (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI/GP North) face-off victory, Masterson fed freshman
Alex Maini (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) who found the back of the net with 5:25 left.
Detroit's defense was able to cause a turnover and then Maini was the playmaker as he found junior
John Nowicki (Clinton Twp., MI/De La Salle) open for the goal and UDM was down by just two, 14-12, with 3:17 on the clock. It was another Titan quick strike after that as another Davenport face-off victory got the ball to Masterson, who got it to Adams and the rookie finished it with his 34th marker of the year and the Titans were down by just one with 2:49 to go.
Marist was able to win the next face-off and take 1:29 off the clock before turning it over giving the Titans one last chance to tie it up. Detroit got two shots off, but just could not get the tying goal, especially on Adams' laser attempt with just seven seconds left in the game that was stopped by the Red Foxes goalie.
Sophomore
A.J. Levell (Columbus, OH/Dublin Scioto) made 13 saves in the game, including some impressive saves early on to keep Marist at bay. Sophomore
Jamie Hebden (Farmington Hills, MI/Brother Rice) had two caused turnovers and four ground balls, while junior
Jason McDonald (Bayport, NY/Bayport-Blue Point), sophomore
Jordan Houtby (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross Secondary), Adams and Davenport each recorded four GB's.
The Titans saw Marist score the first four goals of the game and take a 6-1 lead with 10:45 left in the second. UDM was able to recover from that run and net four straight goals to get within one before the Red Foxes took a 7-5 advantage at the half. The home team was able to open up a big lead again in the third at 12-6, and in the fourth at 14-8 before the Titans' comeback attempt.
The MAAC tournament will take place at Canisius beginning on Friday, May 6, with two semifinal games starting at 4:30 p.m., with the other game at 8 p.m. The championship game will be at Noon on Sunday, May 8. More information on the bracket and times will released tomorrow.
