FULL RESULTS

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Titan's men's and women's fencing teams were in a pair of competitions over the weekend as Saturday saw both squads compete at the West Point Duals in West Point, NY and Sunday saw another meet at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Cleveland State, Hunter College, LaFayette, Stevens Tech., City College of New York (CCNY) and host Army were all in the West Point Duals while Sunday featured a single head-to-head match with Vassar. At West Point Saturday, the team scores saw the Titan men total a 1-3 record while the women finished 3-3. Sunday saw Vassar pull away with victories over both the Titan men and women.

Senior foilist Michael Purdy-Sachs led the men's side as he posted a 14-1 record on the weekend and right behind him was sophomore epeeist Yaroslav Ivanov who went 10-5. On Saturday, Purdy-Sachs recorded an 11-1 total helping the men's foil squad to a 5-4 win over Cleveland State and a 7-2 win over Hunter College. He went 3-0 on Sunday while Ivanov went 2-1.

On the women's side, sophomore Ariel Skellett won 14 of her 18 matches helping the women's sabre team score four wins over three losses. Skellett also posted a 2-1 winning mark on Sunday.

Saturday, the Titans scored a sweep over Hunter College with the men scoring a 16-11 team victory and the women won 14-13. The other victories for the women came over CCNY (15-12) and Cleveland State (19-8) as the sabre squad on the women's side led the way for Detroit with 27 wins and just 21 losses on Saturday.

On the second day, women's sabre posted the best female mark at 3-6 while men's foil and men's epee each went 3-6.

The women's team brought in quality results as Skellett was the first Detroit women fencer to record double-digit wins in a tournament this year with 12 on Saturday. Fellow sophomores Paige Zmudczynski (Epee) and Eva Berndt (sabre) each posted nine wins over seven losses tying for the second-best Titan total on Saturday. Freshmen Jill Johnson at 8-8 and freshman Katie Lang with a 6-10 mark also produced a good day on Saturday.

“Mike dropped one bout the entire weekend and did real well and I can't help but be happy with that performance. Ivanov fenced solid for us and our women's sabre squad is starting to pick up the tempo and perform really well for us,” said men's and women's fencing head coach Todd Dressell.

The next meet for the Titan fencers will come this weekend as Detroit will head to South Bend, IN for the Notre Dame Duals.
