SERIES WITH ST. JOHN'S
Detroit and St. John's have only met three times before this matchup, with the Titans leading the series 2-1. Detroit won last year 69-63 on the same night that the court in Calihan Hall was dedicated to Dick Vitale. That game was also televised live on ESPN2. The Red Storm won the first meeting back in 1944 by the final score of 44-31, before the Titans tied the series with a 66-64 win in the NCAA Tournament during the 1998 season.
ABOUT THE RED STORM
St. John's will open its regular season on Tuesday, after playing two exhibition games against Sonoma State (73-55) and Concordia, Ill. (87-36). The Red Storm, which finish 13-19 last season, return BIG EAST All-Rookie team member D'Angelo Harrison, along with combo guard Phil Greene, and forwards Sir'Dominic Pointer and Amir Garrett.
St. John's recorded the No. 8 ranked recruiting class, which included eight student-athletes representing five countries. McCALLUM NAMED TO THE WOODEN AWARD PRESEASON TOP 50
Detroit junior guard
Ray McCallum was recently named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 list, according to a release. The list recognizes the top-returning players in all of college basketball (transfers, freshmen and medical redshirts are not eligible for the preseason list).
The Los Angeles Athletic Club compiles the list, which is chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball media members. Each year these 50 student-athletes who, based on last year's individual performance and team records, are the early frontrunners for college basketball's most prestigious honor (although do not have to be listed to qualify for the postseason award).
McCallum, the Horizon League preseason Player of the Year and first team selection for the second-straight season, was named the Horizon League Tournament MVP last year after he helped lead the Titans to the League crown and their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1999. McCallum led the team in scoring (15.4 ppg), assists (4.0 apg) and steals (1.6 spg) for the second-straight season.

Ray McCallum have been selected as team captains for the 2012-13 season.
