DETROIT (12/15/2012) -- The University of Detroit Mercy had a few select members of the men's and women's track and field squads compete in a pair of meets this past weekend and
Charles Anthony of the men's team led the way with two more first-place finishes in the sprints.
Nine athletes, five men and four women, were in action at either Grand Valley State on Friday or at the University of Windsor on Saturday.
On Saturday, seven student-athletes went across the border and into Canada to compete at the University of Windsor in the Christmas Open. Anthony set the Titan standard for the second straight competition after placing first in the 60 and the 200-meter at Notre Dame last weekend.
Anthony was once again in the 60m and 200m races at Windsor and reached the finals of the 60m with the best qualifying time of the event in 7.20. In the finals, he set a new personal best with a run of 7.07 to take first.
In the 200m, Anthony was ahead of the field again with a 22.80 time. Anthony has now placed first in all four of his individual races so far in the indoor season.
Taylor Hennrick was in the 60-meter hurdles and placed with an 8.88 in the finals. In the 60m, Hennrick qualified for the finals with a run of 7.52 and finished sixth at 7.59.
Justin Peguese rounded out the men's performances in Windsor by winning the high jump with a leap of 1.90m.
On the women's side,
Allison Garner,
Nikia Duncan, and
Brandee Hart were all in the 60m and the 200m in Windsor. Duncan and Garner both qualified for the 60m finals with Duncan winning the event in a time of 7.93, while Garner was third at 8.09.
In the 200m, Hart was the top Titan in the competition as all three Detroit runners were in the top five in a field of 11 racers. Hart recorded a 26.45 and placed second, while Duncan was fourth in 26.57 and Garner claimed fifth with a 26.83.
The final female athlete at Windsor was
Kayla Zauner who was in both the long and the triple jump. In the long jump, she was fourth with a 4.76m mark, while in the triple jump she had a leap of 10.27m.
Anthony Donald and
Joe Raffin went to Grand Valley State on Friday evening to compete in the 400-meter run. Raffin was the top Titan finisher with a time of 50.42 to place 12th, and Donald crossed the finish line in 51.77.
The next scheduled event for both the men's and women's indoor track and field teams will be on Jan. 11 as the Titans will head to Mount Pleasant, Mich., to compete in the Central Michigan Invitational.
