HAMDEN, CT.—Sophomore Joel Matthews (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross) made an early statement with a pair of goals nearly three minutes into the contest and the Titans never looked back as Detroit went on the road and came away with a 13-10 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon.

Matthews ended the day with a career-high seven points on three goals and a career-best four assists. It was also his ninth career hat trick, including his second-straight on the year.

Senior Scott Harris (Saline, MI/Saline) tallied three goals for his fourth career hat trick, while sophomore Alex Maini (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) had four points on a pair of goals and assists. Freshman Damie Danseglio (Sayville, NY/Connetquot) made his first collegiate start and picked up the win in net making seven saves.

“It is about progress and this is just another game that shows how far we have come in a short time,” said assistant coach Chris Kolon. “They are a good program, good coaches and they beat us good the first two times and we were able to go there and get a win.”

It was the first win over Quinnipiac as the Bobcats defeated the Titans 15-4 in 2009 at home and 13-8 in 2010 in the Motor City, but in this game, the red, white and blue never trailed.

The Titan defense held the Bobcats (0-4) scoreless on six extra-man attempts and saw Quinnipiac turn the ball over 27 times, including 14 caused turnovers. Junior Jordan Houtby (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross) led in that department with a game-high four caused turnovers to go with six ground balls. It was the fourth game on the year that he has posted four caused TO's.

UDM (3-4) took it right to Quinnipiac as junior Brandon Davenport (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI/GP North) won the opening face-off and picked up one of his team-high seven ground balls. The ball would find its way to Matthews and after his first shot was high, he got the Titans on the board at the 14:09 mark. A couple of minutes later, freshman Mike Birney (Plymouth, MI/Catholic Central) fed Matthews and he beat the keeper to give the red, white and blue a 2-0 lead.

After a caused turnover, the Titan Canadian connection struck again as Matthews found sophomore Shayne Adams (St. Catharines, ON/Denis Morris) for the first of his two goals on the day and Detroit was on top, 3-0, at the 12:11 mark in the first.

Detroit kept up the offensive intensity for the rest of the period to take a 6-1 lead after one. Matthews had another assist in that spurt helping on sophomore Scott Drummond's (Birmingham, MI/Seaholm) goal, while Maini found Harris for his first with 2:07 left. Another Titan duo came together for the sixth marker as redshirt freshman Thomas Sible (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Central) located Maini, and the second-year attackman did the rest beating the keeper with just nine ticks left on the first period clock.

QU got the first goal of the second, but the Titans would eventually run its lead to as many as seven, 10-3, with 5:27 left in the third as Matthews teamed up with Maini for another goal.

The Bobcats attempted to come back, but would get no closer than three as Detroit closed out the game for its second road victory of the year and the third true road win in program history.

Davenport ended the game 8-of-15 in face-offs. Senior defenseman Jason McDonald (Bayport, NY/Bayport-Blue Point) had three caused turnovers and posted his second collegiate goal, while Adams and Matthews had three ground balls apiece.

With seven non-conference games under their belt, the Titans will now get ready for the MAAC as they open the conference schedule next Saturday at Canisius. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
