LEXINGTON, Va. – The Titans saw VMI race out to a five-goal lead and despite outscoring the Keydets, 6-3, from the second period on, the Detroit men's lacrosse team fell by a score of 8-7 on Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops Detroit to 6-8 overall and 3-3 in the MAAC. Even with the loss, UDM clinched the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Championship as Marist fell to Canisius, 7-5. With that outcome, Jacksonville was eliminated due to goals allowed tiebreaker. UDM will face third-seeded Canisius in the semifinals with Marist taking on top-seeded Siena in the other match-up.

Sophomores Shayne Adams (St. Catharines, ON/Denis Morris) and Alex Maini (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) each netted a pair of goals, while seniors Scott Harris (Saline, MI/Saline) and Brad Janer (Novi, MI/Detroit Catholic Central) and sophomore Tom Masterson (London, ON/St. Thomas Aquinas) all found the back of the net with Harris and Janer also adding an assist.

VMI (4-10, 2-4 MAAC) scored the game's first three goals on its Senior Day, before junior Tyler Corcoran (South Lyon, MI/South Lyon) won a face-off and found Maini open for a shot and the score. The Keydets then went on another 3-0 run to take a 6-1 lead with 8:14 left in the second period.

The Titans began their comeback with 6:28 left in the first half as Janer notched his first goal since his sophomore season. That marker ignited a 4-0 run as Harris' tally cut the deficit to 6-3 at the intermission.

Detroit then took advantage of a pair of VMI penalties with Harris finding Adams for his first early in the third and then Maini capitalizing on the extra-man attack with 5:53 left to get UDM within one, 6-5.

One final spurt by the Keydets was a backbreaker as they notched two goals in a seven-second span to push its lead back to three, 8-5.

It looked like Detroit would be out of it completely as a three-minute non-releasable penalty began the fourth, but instead of giving up a score, the Titans did the damage killing off the man-down, while Janer fed Masterson for the shorthanded marker and UDM was down by just two, 8-6.

With less than five minutes left, Adams ripped one past the goalie and the Titans were back within one again, but could not get the game-tying goal down the stretch.

Junior A.J. Levell (Columbus, OH/Dublin Scioto) made 10 saves in between the pipes and picked up a team-high four ground balls. Corcoran was 7-of-14 on the day in face-offs, while senior Jon Bemben (Hartland, MI/Hartland) had two caused turnovers and three GB's.

The MAAC Championship will take place next week, May 4-6, at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. The Titans are slated to play the Golden Griffins at 4:30 on Friday. For more information on the MAAC Championship, click here.
