DETROIT -- The Titans responded from an early deficit to even the score in the third, but a second-half Siena spurt was too much to overcome as the Titans fell to the Saints, 15-8, on Saturday afternoon at Titan Field.
The loss drops Detroit to 5-6 on the season and 2-2 in the MAAC. Siena improved to 7-3, 3-0 in conference play.
Sophomore
Alex Maini (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) was the top scorer for the red, white and blue finishing with two goals and an assist. Six other Titans found the back of the net, while junior
Jamie Hebden (Farmington Hills, MI/Brother Rice) had four caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Detroit trailed from the very start as the Saints went up 3-0 nine minutes into the contest. UDM got on the board with four minutes left in the period as sophomore
Shayne Adams (St. Catharines, ON/Denis Morris) fired one past the goalie.
After Siena regained a three-goal lead, junior
Chris Nemes (Novi, MI/Detroit Catholic Central) picked up a ground ball and went right to the net for his lone score of the contest and the Titans were within two at the end of the first period.
The Saints went up 5-2 at the 9:39 mark of the second, but the Titans fought back to make it a one-score game at the half. First sophomore
Joel Matthews (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross) netted a marker and with just over two minutes left, senior
John Nowicki (Clinton Twp., MI/De La Salle Collegiate) went one-on-one with his defender and was able to beat the keeper.
The Titans would knot the score at 5-all early in the third as sophomore
Troy Dennis (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) found senior
Scott Harris (Saline, MI/Saline) and the midfielder put one in for his 15th goal of the year.
From there, Siena took control by scoring nine straight to open a 14-5 lead with 6:50 left in the game. Freshman
Mike Birney (Plymouth, MI/Catholic Central) would end that run in the fourth and Maini scored two goals in the final four minutes of the contest.
Junior
A.J. Levell (Columbus, OH/Dublin Scioto) made 13 saves in between the pipes. Junior
Jordan Houtby (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross) had three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while junior
Brandon Davenport (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI/GP North) was 7-of-13 in face-offs with three GB's.
The Titans return to action next Saturday for another MAAC showdown when Jacksonville travels to the Motor City. Game time is set for Noon at Titan Field.
