DETROIT (8/24/2012) -- Junior forward
Abby McCollum scored two goals in the opening eight minutes of the game on Friday afternoon as she celebrated her birthday with her UDM (2-1) teammates and a 3-0 win over Marygrove (0-2) at Titan Field.
“A victory is a victory. We didn't play our best today but give Marygrove credit, they sat back and played solid defense,” said UDM women's soccer head coach
Mike Lupenec who collected his 176th career victory as a head coach with the win.
McCollum's first of the day came at the three minute mark as a loose ball bounced its way off of her and into the net to put the Titans up 1-0. Her second was a mirror image of
Kaitlyn Quarrell's third goal on Monday against Canisius. That game saw Quarrell receive a pass from the left side of the goal line from newcomer
Haley Burtraw and this time, Quarrell was on the passing end as she set up McCollum inside the six-yard box for the tap in and the second UDM goal.
The final Detroit goal came from Burtraw whose loose ball wound up in the net for the final goal of the contest at the 30:00 mark of the game.
“In the first half, we put away three early goals and we got the result we wanted. We should have finished more of our chances but that's what happens in soccer. We tried our best and we're looking forward to playing against Michigan,” said McCollum who registered her first points of the 2012 campaign.
Despite no offensive goals in the second half, Detroit controlled the bulk of the possession and held a 10-1 second half shooting advantage. Overall, the Titans finished with a 20-5 lead in total shots.
Junior goaltender
Nora Abolins made one save for the Titans collecting her second straight shutout.
The Titans will head to Ann Arbor on Sunday afternoon to take on the Michigan Wolverines at U-M Soccer Stadium. For information on tickets, live stats, and directions, check out
