Second Half Tally Leads Michigan Over Titans Sunday

Box Score

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (8/26/2012) -- A scoreless tie at the half and a close overall match were just some of the scenes at the U-M Soccer Complex, as a goal in the 65th minute was the difference as the Detroit Titan's women's soccer team (2-2) fell to the Michigan Wolverines (4-0) on Sunday.

“I felt that the girls played 90 minutes of really hard soccer. It was unlucky on the goal coming off the deflection, but I'm happy with where we are and I think down the road, you're going to see greater things,” said UDM women's soccer head coach Mike Lupenec. “If we fine tune a few things offensively the future looks good for us this year.”

Abby McCollum had a great opportunity not even ten minutes into the game grabbing a loose ball and firing it on net at the 8:20 mark from just outside the 18-yard box, but the shot went wide to the left to keep the game scoreless.

McCollum had another great opportunity breaking in on net in the second half that was blocked, but it created a corner kick opportunity for the Titans. The ensuing corner saw Sarah Dzuris place a ball inside the six-yard box and Alyssa Riley skied above the defense but her header just went above the crossbar at 54:03 as Detroit was still kept off the scoreboard.

The final push for the Titans saw two more corner kicks in the final five minutes of the game, but the Michigan defense would keep UDM out of the net and hold on for the victory.

The Titans were outshot by an 11-5 margin overall, but a strong second half led to four corner kicks in the period. UDM went into the break with the score knotted at 0-0 and controlled a majority of the possession in the final half of regulation.

Goalkeeper Nora Abolins made five saves on the day for the Titans.

The next match-up for Detroit will be on Friday evening in Rochester Hills to play another local rival in Oakland under the lights for an 8:00 p.m. start. For all the info, check out Women's Soccer Game Central.
