NOTRE DAME, Ind. (9/15/2012) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's cross country team finished in 16th place for the second-straight season as the Titans wrapped up its third race of the season in the 33rd Annual National Catholic Championship.
“We did a nice job in miles 2-3 to keep after it,” said head coach Guy Murray. “Today showed good potential for the season when we get the first mile in better position. We missed
Kirstin Mooney's fast start opening the path for us.“
UDM posted 508 points on the afternoon as two Titans finished in the top 80 on the 5k Notre Dame Cross Country Course. The Fighting Irish won the event for the 19th time in the last 21 years.
Senior
Katrina Oberski was the top Titan on the day finishing 75th in 19:11, an improvement from last year's 19:25 and 88th-place effort.
Junior
Louisa Coppola made her season debut for Detroit and was the second UDM harrier in running 19:17 for 85th.
Sophomore
Zeinab Baydoun was 122nd in 19:47, 12 seconds better than her run on the course as a freshman. Senior
Sarah Martinez also bested her time from a year ago in taking 130th in 19:55.
Detroit nearly had five runners post sub-20 minute runs as senior
Olivia Smid crossed the finish line in 20:01 for 137th. It would have been the first time since 1998 that UDM would have had five runners under 20 in a 5k.
Junior
Rachel Hofsess ran 20:09 for 145th, while sophomore
Sara Taylor set a personal record with a time of 21:04 (191st).
The Titans will get back to training as they are idle next week, and will be back on the course on Sept.29 when UDM makes the trip to Louisville to run in the Greater Louisville Classic.
