GREEN BAY, Wisc. (9/22/2012) -- Junior
Abby McCollum's third goal of the year was a pivotal one as she tallied the only goal of the day to help the Detroit women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory on the road at Green Bay in its Horizon League opener on Saturday afternoon.
The win moved UDM to 4-4-1 on the year, while the Phoenix fell to 3-6.
The game was scoreless for 84 minutes until the Titans struck for the winning goal. Senior
Sarah Dzuris started the scoring play with a corner kick and that was followed by a header from sophomore
Alyssa Riley, which was saved, but McCollum was right there to collect the rebound and put in the marker. Dzuris and Riley were both credited with an assist on the play.
The Titans dominated the pace of play all game long outshooting Green Bay, 14-2, with nine of those on net. After a slow start to the contest, Detroit picked it up in the second half keeping the pressure on the home team with 10 shots, but it was the final shot of the game that was the difference.
Junior
Nora Abolins made a pair of saves for her fourth shutout on the year, but she was helped by a Titan defense that allowed Green Bay just two shots on the day.
Detroit will now get ready for a showdown with the Milwaukee Panthers when the Titans return home on Thursday, September. 27. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
