NORTHVILLE, Mich. (9/8/2012) -- A pair of Titans finished in the top 10 and UDM had three runners in the top 20 as the Detroit men's cross country team totaled 62 points for third place at the 26th Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational. The yearly 4-mile race was held at Cass Benton Park in Northville.
Junior
Martin Nelkie led the way for Detroit as he was the top Titan for the second-straight week. Nelkie trailed teammate
Colin Creagh for much of the race, but caught him on the final stretch to take eighth overall with a personal record 21:02 run.
Creagh ended up 10th for another top-10 effort and with a career-best time of 21:08.
Senior
Edwin Gay was just four seconds off his collegiate 4-mile best as he crossed the finish line in 21:22 for 19th.
Two sophomores posted career times in the 4-mile as
Ylli Alla was 28th in 21:46, while
Ryan Hofsess took over two minutes off his previous low as he was 30th in 21:50. Junior
Sam Felton placed 36th in 21:60.
Bucknell totaled 26 points for the win and with the Bison in town, so was Titan alum and former Detroit women's cross country head coach and the founder of the Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational Kevin Donner. Donner is now the head coach at Bucknell.
The day began with a pair of open 5k races for the men and women followed by the ever-growing 1.5-mile middle school race. Tommy Titan was also on hand once again as he took part in the Tommy Titan Future Legends Kid's Race as children 9 and under ran the final hill (200-meters) against the lovable mascot.
The men's open 5k was won by Matt Fecht for the fourth year in a row as the 2012 Olympic Marathon trial competitor also took 6th in the men's collegiate 4-mile. In the women's open 5k, former Titan standout Andrea Karl was 11th in a time of 19:14.
Detroit will return to action on Friday, Sept. 14, as the red, white and blue take part in another tradition by competing in the National Catholic Invitational at Notre Dame. The women's race will start at 4:15 p.m., while the men's race will begin at 5 p.m.
