DETROIT (10/12/13) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team is still searching for its first Horizon League victory after dropping its third Horizon League match against UIC 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Titan Field.
UIC (9-3, 2-0 Horizon League) opened the match getting many opportunities to take an advantage over UDM. In the opening minutes of the contest UIC was leading the Titans in shots 5-0, and 8-0 in corner kicks. In fact, the Flames had a series of five corner kicks in the span of a minute and forty seconds.
It took some time for Detroit (2-6-4, 0-3 HL) to put something together for a run at goal, and about midway through the match the Titans began to gather some nice runs. However, after a Titan corner, UIC was off and running once again and forced UDM into a costly penalty into the box.
Off the penalty kick, UIC's Slobodan Aleksov was able to convert to put the Flames up 1-0 in the 28th minute before heading into the half.
After falling behind for the early in the first half and being outshot by UIC, 11-6, the Titans needed to go on the offensive to turn things around.
UDM put together some positive looks trying to get make a dent in the scoreboard but could not quite convert on the attempts.
In the 78th minute, UIC's Bob Novak drilled a shot from just outside the box that went in to give the Flames some breathing room and a 2-0 lead.
UDM will compete in its second consecutive home game on Tuesday, Oct. 15 against in-state rival Western Michigan at 3 p.m.
