DETROIT (10/29/13) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team fell, 1-0, in the Sunshine State against the University of South Florida in its first ever meeting at Corbett Soccer Stadium Tuesday night.
It wasn't long into the match when the South Florida Bulls (5-3-7, 1-2-3 American Athletic Conference) were off and running towards a goal, but Detroit (3-9-4, 0-5 Horizon League) junior keeper
Nathan Steinwascher made some impressive saves to keep the match even. However, after several stops, the Bulls were finally able to beat Steinwascher when Steven Salinas curved a shot from the left side of the pitch to just inside of the top right corner for the advantage.
The Bulls were almost able to add another after
Kevin Pinkos made a critical mistake pulling down Samuel Hosseini in the box to receive a penalty kick. Luckily, Steinwascher, who was receiving a lot of praise from the commentators on the broadcast all night long, made a diving save to the bottom left, and continued to make saves before the half to keep the match in reach.
In the second stanza, UDM came out far more aggressive in an attempt to make something happen and they certainly had its fair share of opportunities. In the 30th minute, Detroit had a series of throw-ins from
Adam Bedell, including a couple that almost found its way into the net on behalf of
Ryan Goike,
Tyler Moorman and
Jason Leslie, but the Titans just could not catch a break in knocking one in.
Detroit will return to Titan Field on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 1:00 p.m., as seniors
Adam Bedell,
Kevin Pinkos,
Kevin Gill,
Mike Pugh,
Patrick Soltys, and
Ian McDonald-Wilkins will play their final home match against Wright State. Admission for Saturday's contest is
FREE.
Game Notes:
The loss snapped Detroit's three-game nonconference win streak, which started against IPFW on Oct. 1 … Steinwascher's seven saves were the most since the Horizon League opener against Milwaukee on Sept. 28 … This was the first meeting between Detroit and USF.
