BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (10/8/13) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team got its second consecutive nonconference win defeating Bowling Green, 2-1, on Tuesday night at Cochrane Field.
Detroit (2-5-4) was on the offensive early as
Tyler Moorman nearly put the Titans ahead eight minutes into the match, but his shot sailed just wide right of the post. Both teams would then trade possessions as neither could truly put together a serious run at a goal.
After 30 minutes of back and forth action, things began to pick up, for the Falcons at least. Anthony Grant put in the first goal of the match off a cross from Joe Sullivan and Ryan Snashall as BGSU took a 1-0 advantage.
In the Titans last two contests, it was
Jason Leslie who subbed into the match to give the Titans a goal, but with Leslie in the starting lineup, someone else would have to take that role with the Titans searching for a way to even the score.
On his first shot of the match with just 41 seconds remaining,
Zachary Atwood broke off a Falcon defender before sending a laser past the keeper about 20 yards out for his first collegiate goal and the equalizer just before the half.
"I didn't see it coming. It was honestly slow motion for me, everything slowed down," said Atwood after the equalizer. "I just took a touch and let it go and it went in, I was just happy it finally came through. I wanted to celebrate after, but I just didn't know how to react," Atwood added.
The Falcons were certainly getting their opportunities to go back ahead, but some great goaltending by
Nathan Steinwascher kept Detroit from losing its' grip on the match as he came up with seven second-half saves.
With four minutes left in regulation and after having several opportunities on goal earlier, senior captain
Adam Bedell put his mark on the evening as the Livonia, Mich., native knocked in the game-winning goal in the 85th minute.
UDM will jump back into Horizon League action this Saturday, Oct. 12, at 3:00 p.m., at Titan Field against UIC. The match will be the backend of a doubleheader with the women's soccer team as the Titans host Green Bay at 1 p.m.
