Second Half Run Lifts Akron Past Detroit, 79-60

AKRON, Ohio (12/18/13) – The Akron Zips opened the second half with a 25-6 run, en route to scoring 58 points in the second stanza to top the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team, 79-60, Wednesday night at James A. Rhodes Arena. The Titans led 30-21 at the half, before the Zips made three-straight three pointers to tie the game to open the second half.

Detroit (5-7) was led by sophomore guard Anton Wilson who finished with 16 points - 11 in the second half - while junior forward Juwan Howard Jr. pitched in 13 points and senior co-captain Evan Bruinsma added 12 points and six rebounds.

Detroit opened the game with a 9-0 run over the first four minutes of action, before a three-pointer from Deji Ibitayo put the Zips on the board 9-3. The Titans then answered back with an 11-3 run to build a 20-6 lead with nine minutes left in the opening stanza. Akron would trim the lead to 22-15 with just over four minutes reaming, before the Titans took a 30-21 lead into the locker room. Howard led Detroit with nine points, while Bruinsma added seven.

Akron (5-2) made three three-pointers form three different players during it first three possessions of the second stanza to tie the score 30-30 with 18:04 left. Detroit then regained the lead after a jumper from Howard, before the Zips responded with a 14-2 run to build a 10 point lead, 46-36, with 13 minutes left. Detroit trimmed the lead to 50-41 with 10:49 remaining, before the three-pointers started to fall again for Akron as it closed the game with a 29-19 run. The Zips made nine three-pointers in the second half.

Demetrius Treadwell led Akron with 22 points – 15 in the first half – and 13 rebounds, while Nyles Evans pitched in 17 points and Quincy Diggs scored 10 with seven assists.

Detroit finished shooting 36.1 percent (22-of-61) overall, while Akron shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) overall, including an unheard of 71.4 percent (20-of-28) in the second half. The Titans finished 7-of-18 from downtown, while the Zips finished 11-of-21 from beyond the arc, including 9-of-12 in the second stanza.

Detroit will conclude its three-game road trip with a visit to Bowling Green on Sunday, Dec. 22. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 2:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center and can be listened to live on 97.1 The Ticket's webstream online with Dan Leach the voice of Titan Basketball.
