EVANSTON, Ill. (2/4/2013) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's fencing teams were back in action on Sunday competing at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion in Evanston, Ill. for the Northwestern Mega-Meet hosted by Northwestern University.
Junior
Paige Zmudczynski from the women's epee team finished with a team-high seven wins on the day including helping the epee squad to a 5-4 win over UC San Diego. Sophomore
Kaylah Berndt added two wins for women's epee in the 5-4 team victory. Berndt posted a nice win total coming up with six overall wins including a pair of 2-1 records against both UC San Diego and Fairleigh Dickenson.

Katie Lang from the women's sabre team was not to be outdone as
Eva Berndt and Lang each totaled six wins in competition. The sabre team came up with its lone win in a big 7-2 win over the California Institute of Technology (CIT) as the women's team narrowly fell to CIT, 14-13.
The women's foil team also had a close bout with CIT, in a tense 5-4 loss. Freshman
Roby Wong came up with two big wins while sophomore
Mary Colombo and freshman
Christina Powers each had one apiece but could not find one more to tip UDM over the top.
The men's side saw the team's lone senior,
Clint Mikek, capture six overall wins. Mikek's day was highlighted by a 3-0 finish over CIT as his men's epee squad fell by just one in the 5-4 battle. Fellow epeeist
Jacob Theut also captured a win in that team loss while the third member of the epee squad, freshman
Brock Bendes, earned a pair of wins against UC San Diego.
Freshmen
Andrew Gibbons also came up with four wins at Northwestern for the men's sabre team.
The women faced teams from the California Institute of Technology (CIT), Stanford, Temple, Princeton, Fairleigh Dickenson, North Carolina, UC San Diego, and Northwestern while the men matched-up against North Carolina, Princeton, CIT, Stanford, UC San Diego, and Northwestern.
The Titans will prepare for the next team meet that will come on Feb. 23 at the Notre Dame Duals in South Bend. Detroit will also welcome alumni fencers to Calihan Hall for the annual
UDM Fencing Alumni Meet scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 10 starting at 11am.
