SOUTH BEND, Ind. (3/10/2013) -- It was the final competition of the 2012-13 fencing season as seven Titan fencers were at the NCAA Midwest Fencing Regionals and the first round of the NCAA Tournament hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend this past weekend.
It was the third straight week that Detroit fenced at Notre Dame. The Irish hosted the Midwest Fencing Conference Championship last weekend and also the Notre Dame Duals back on Feb. 23.
Eva Berndt from women's sabre had the best finish for the Titans this weekend at Notre Dame posting four victories and placing 12th of 16 while fellow sabreists
Katie Lang (13th) and
Shannon Canavan (14th) were close behind in the competition.
Kaylah Berndt was in the women's epee event and finished in 17th place.
On the men's side,
Clint Mikek came up with three victories in men's epee and placed 19th. Also on the men's side,
Cole Goike was 14th in men's foil while freshman
Andrew Gibbons wrapped up the UDM results coming in 13th overall in men's sabre.
This will bring the 2012-13 fencing season to a close for the Titans. The men's roster featured just one senior, Mikek, on men's epee and juniors
Elijah Robertson and
Cole Goike who fence with the foil weapon. Junior
Yaroslav Ivanov did not participate this season after
studying abroad in Poland. Ivanov finished second on the team in overall wins a season ago and he is expected to return in 2013-14.
Frank Adamini returned for his sophomore year in 2012-13 in men's sabre and newcomers
Brock Bendes and
Jacob Theut (epee), Gibbons, and
Soroush Labaf foil) made up the remainder of the men's team who competed this season.
The women's team had juniors
Eva Berndt and Canavan return for women's sabre and fellow junior
Paige Zmudczynski on the women's epee squad in 2012-13. Sophomores Lang,
Lauren Snarski (epee),
Kaylah Berndt,
Mary Colombo (foil), all returned while freshmen
Christina Powers and
Roby Wong debuted for the Titans in women's foil.
