COLUMBUS, Ohio (4/1/2013) -- Two goals from both Megan Callahan and Kylie Birney could not pull the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team over the San Diego State Aztecs as the Titans fell 14-6 in a game played at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State Monday afternoon.

Zaynib Hamze and Erin Campbell both added single goals for Detroit.

At the end of the day, the two teams were close in shots, ground balls, clears, saves, and turnovers and Lexie McCormick finished with seven saves on the day in the cage for Detroit but goals and draw controls were the ultimate difference. SDSU had a slight advantage in shots (29-24) and ground balls (20-19) and made two more saves (9-7) while committing one more foul and the two teams each finished with 18 turnovers. UDM was 15-20 (75%) on clears and San Diego State was 14-17 (82%).

San Diego State (7-3) jumped on the board 59 seconds into the contest and went on to score the first five goals of the game.

Detroit (1-11) came back and countered one goal at a time to creep up on the Aztecs. It started at the 11:49 mark of the opening half as Titan goalie McCormick made a huge save from in close that started a UDM rally. A rally of four straight goals from Detroit started as Kylie Birney scored her 10th goal of the season off an assist from Tessa Keuler to put UDM on the board.

Senior captain Hamze followed that and ripped a shot that beat the SDSU goalie to make it 5-2 and then Campbell scored in her sixth straight game to cut the deficit to two. The other senior captain Callahan made it a one-goal game with 4:57 remaining in the opening half and the Titans were looking to compelete the comeback.

A yellow card issued to San Diego State with 1:38 left of the first half gave Detroit a man-up opportunity and a chance to tie the game but the Aztecs managed to increase their lead to two with a goal in the final second of the first half and take a 6-4 lead into the locker room.

The second half began with four straight Aztec goals to put Detroit down by a 10-4 score but Birney scored her second of the game taking an assist from Campbell to stop the San Diego State run.

That would start a string of four straight goals for the Aztecs and make the game 14-5. A late goal from Callahan, with four ticks left on the clock, with an assist from Hamze would bring about the final score of 14-6. The assist from Hamze was the 100th point of her career.

McCormick grabbed a team-high five ground balls while defenders Amanda Guthrie, Britany Busch, and Taylor Marshall each had three.

Detroit will return home to begin play in the Atlantic Sun Conference on Sunday as Howard will head to Titan Field for a 1:00 p.m. game.
