OLEAN, N.Y. (4/17/2013) -- Senior
Zaynib Hamze scored a career-best six goals, added an assist and became the school's all-time leader in assists with 35 against the St. Bonaventure Bonnies on Wednesday afternoon. She added four draw controls but the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team fell 15-9 to the Bonnies.
Hamze took a game-high 12 shots overall and had four goals in the first half. She now leads the team with 34 goals and 10 assists for 44 points with 15 goals in her last three games. She also tied a career high with seven points that she first set earlier this year against Howard on April 7 when she had four goals and three assists in a 16-5 Detroit win. With the assist in today's contest, Hamze passed
Anna Eidem on the UDM all-time career assist list. Eidem and Hamze had a share of the lead at 34 and Hamze's single helper against St. Bonaventure gave Hamze the outright lead.
Against the Bonnies, UDM (3-13, 2-1 Atlantic Sun) was up 7-6 at the end of the first half but a 9-2 St. Bonaventure (6-9) outbreak in the second period of play led to the victory.
Erin Campbell scored twice for Detroit and has now scored in 10 straight contests.
Michaela Schwartz also recorded her 14th goal of the year and
Megan Callahan added an assist to round out Detroit's offense.
The first half saw each team trade goals with St. Bonaventure taking the early lead 37 seconds into the game from the free position. A yellow card issued to the Bonnies gave the Titans a man-up advantage and Detroit capitalized as Campbell scored her 28th goal of the season from the free position with 24:34 left to play.
Hamze started her scoring nearly 10 minutes into the game as she ran all the way around the SBU net and scored on a great little deke to put the Titans up 2-1 before the home team tied it up and then took the lead with another goal.
Campbell's second of the day tied the game up and Hamze's 30th of the season gave Detroit a 4-3 advantage with 13:43 left on the clock.
A Bonnie goal tied it back up before Schwartz took a pass from Hamze and gave the Titans the lead back before another St. Bonaventure goal from the free position tied the game up once again at 5-5. Hamze scored again and then both teams traded goals once more as UDM would take a 7-6 lead into the locker room at the half thanks to the fourth goal of the day, and number 32 on the season, from Hamze.
At the end of the first, Detroit held a 15-14 shooting advantage and had a 10-5 edge in ground balls. SBU was up 7-5 in draw controls.
In the second half, the Bonnies totaled nine goals on 16 shots. SBU scored the first four of the second half before Hamze added back-to-back markers to close Detroit to make it 10-9 St. Bonaventure. The first of her two second-half goals came off a nice pass from fellow senior co-captain
Megan Callahan.
SBU would close out the game with the next five tallies and finish the game ahead by a 15-9 margin.
Midfielder
Kylie Birney had a game-high six ground balls while defender
Amanda Guthrie and goalkeeper
Lexie McCormick each had five.
UDM will conclude the 2013 regular season schedule this Sunday at Titan Field against Kennesaw State. It will be Senior Day with first draw set for 1:00 p.m. and a ceremony set to take place right before game time to honor seniors Hamze, Callahan,
Britany Busch, and
Lindsey Saunders.
