Tessa Keuler set a career-high with five goals while senior
Zaynib Hamze set her own career-mark with four goals and three assists for seven points as the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team won 16-5 Sunday over the Howard Bison in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both teams.
Keuler scored five times, including three markers in the first half, and established a new career high in goals. Hamze, who now leads the team in points with 32, finished with four goals and three assists for Detroit (2-11, 1-0 A-Sun) while seven different Titans scored in the victory over Howard (1-12, 0-1 A-Sun).
Lindsey Saunders and
Erin Campbell each recorded two goals while
Michaela Schwartz,
Ellery Alexander, and
Jenna Payne also tallied for the Titans. It was the first collegiate point for Alexander.
Lexie McCormick made seven saves tending the nets for Detroit.
The first half was tight as the Titans posted a 7-4 lead heading into the break. In the opening frame, Detroit held a small 19-13 lead in shots and UDM committed 18 fouls to just 10 for Howard giving the Bison an opportunity to stick around in the game.
In the second half, Detroit came back to hold a 17-2 shooting advantage to finish with a 36-15 overall advantage while the Titans also led the Bison in ground balls, 26-14. Detroit outscored Howard 9-1 in the second half en route to the victory.
Keuler started the Titan attack with a goal 2:20 into the contest. Campbell followed that taking a pass from Hamze to give Detroit a 2-0 advantage. The Titans and Bison would trade the next three goals as Campbell and Keuler added their second goals of the day and Saunders tallied her first to make it 5-3 Detroit with 12:29 to play in the first half.
Hamze and Keuler added single goals to send UDM into the locker room up by a 7-4 score.
The Titan barrage of scoring started 2:42 into the second half as Hamze was in on the next four goals. She had two quick goals herself and then assisted on the next two helping Schwartz tally her 12
th of the season and Keuler net her fourth of the day to give Detroit an 11-4 lead with 20:43 still remaining in regulation time.
Payne recorded her second goal of the year on a free position before Keuler took a pass from Saunders and tallied her fifth of the day and 16
th of the season. Saunders added another goal before Howard would stop the bleeding with a counter after eight straight Detroit goals made it a 14-5 game.
UDM would add two more goals as Hamze scored her team-leading 23
rd goal of the season. Alexander registered her first collegiate point in the final minute of the game with a goal that would wrap up the score sheet for Detroit over Howard.
The Titans will continue Atlantic Sun Conference play this weekend and will travel to Florida as Detroit will play at Stetson in DeLand, Fla. Friday at 4:00 p.m. and then Sunday at Jacksonville at 12:00 p.m.
