Recap From 1st Annual Challenge

DETROIT (6/11/2013) -- It was time for the second annual Detroit's Sports Commission (DSC) Mascot Challenge held at Campus Martius in downtown Detroit Tuesday afternoon as Tommy Titan from the University of Detroit Mercy was joined by seven other mascots for a variety of challenges.

Tommy Titan was chosen as the captain of the College Mascot team that included mascots from Eastern Michigan, Oakland, and Wayne State.

"Champ", from the DSC, was the captain of team two known as the Professional Mascots that included "Hooper" from the Pistons, "Roary" from the Lions, and "Paws" from the Tigers.

The group was gathered to celebrate the first birthday of Champ after his name was unveiled at the first annual Mascot Challenge last year.

Tom Leyden, Sports Director at WXYZ (Channel 7 locally and ABC affiliate), served as the emcee for the event. The mascots took part in races testing agility and strength including a wheelbarrow race, a relay race involving carrying a jug of water, and a race including push-ups and a test of other athletic skills. Finally a tug of war was the last competition and it was the event that eventually decided the winner.

The Professional Mascots clinched the win with an extra pull in the tug of war that pitted Champ on the winning side two years in a row after he claimed the home run challenge a year ago.

When asked to comment on the day's event, Tommy was speechless but nodded in approval that he was proud of his team's efforts and was glad to be part of the celebration for Champ's birthday. Tommy also confirmed, via a head shake, that he was looking forward to next year's event in 2014.
