DETROIT (8/16/2013) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team captured a victory on the strength of a pair of nice crosses into the goal crease. Sophomore Heather Brown and junior Haley Burtraw both connected for second half goals in a 2-1 exhibition win over the Toledo Rockets at Titan Field Friday afternoon.

"Anna Mindling made a big difference in the second half and I was proud of how we played in the second half," said UDM women's soccer head coach Mike Lupenec. "Both Anna and Alyssa Riley really worked their tails and controlled the midfield that Toledo was winning in the first half."

Toledo scored first registering a tally in the 21st minute of play on a penalty kick to go up 1-0. The Rockets would take that lead into halftime after each team had three shots in the opening frame.

The Titans would tie it up as sophomore Jennifer Borawski played a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box and into the goal crease. The ball went to Brown, who came in from her defensive position, and made no mistake heading the ball into the back of the net at the 67:35 mark.

UDM would take the lead in the 79th minute as senior Kaitlyn Quarrell was on the right side of the field and played a nice ball into the crease. Burtraw connected on a header and directed it off the inside of the right post and in the net for a 2-1 lead and the eventual game-winning goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Martha Dunbar made two saves in net for Detroit playing the entire game.

"Martha Dunbar had a great game," said Lupenec . "When it was 1-0 for Toledo, they had a great opportunity off our mistake and she made a big save which is great for her as a sophomore goaltender and it builds her confidence that helps us shoot for that championship this year."

The Titans will host an exhibition match on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against the alumni team. UDM will open the regular season on Fri. Aug. 23 at Eastern Michigan for a 5:00 p.m.
