SOUTH BEND, Ind. (12/5/2014) -- Sophomore
Ilia Panev won the 60-meter hurdles Friday night as the University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field team opened the 2014-15 season at the Blue and Gold Invitational on the campus of Notre Dame. The invitational was individually based and featured teams from Bethel, Marquette, DePaul and Notre Dame.
Panev had the top time in the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries (8.43) and won the finals with a time of 8.52. Sophomore
Jacob Whitting also qualified for the finals trimming .21 seconds off his preliminary time to finish with a personal-record 8.94 for sixth place.
Junior
Joshua Carolin recorded a PR in the mile run in his season debut, crossing the line in a time of 4:21.59, just less than a second out of second place.
Sophomore
Brandon Wilks placed third in the 60-meter dash posting a time of 6.99 in the finals after a 6.94 in the preliminaries. Panev finished at 7.31 in seventh place, just outside of the finals race.
Wilks was also Detroit's top finisher in the 200m, placing eighth in 22.69. Freshman
Zach Arnold had a time of 23.02, Panev finished in 23.07 and junior
Colton Wirgau posted a time of 23.43 in the race. Sophomore
Joe Harmon (23.56) and Whitting (24.97) also competed in the 200m for UDM.
Sophomore
Khalil Parris finished fourth in the 400-meters to pace Detroit with a time of 48.87. Also in the 400m, Arnold finished in 50.83, Harmon crossed in 51.84 and Wirgau had a time of 51.89.
The Titans were second to host Notre Dame in the 4x400 meter relay. The relay squad of Wirgau, Arnold, Harmon and Parris clocked a 3:24.11.
Detroit returns to competition after the new year, traveling to a triangular meet at Eastern Michigan on Jan. 9 in Ypsilanti, Mich.
