EVANSTON, Ill. (2/3/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's fencing teams competed in the Northwestern Mega-Meet on Sunday in Illinois.
"We fenced alright and we had a couple of good bouts that we won but in general we came out flat in the morning and as the day went on the opponents became harder and harder," said UDM men's and women's fencing head coach
Todd Dressell.
The men's team fenced against Penn, North Carolina (UNC), Stanford, Princeton, Duke, California Institute of Technology (CIT), UC San Diego (UCSD), and Lawrence University.
The women's team went up against Temple, Penn, Tufts, Duke, Stanford, UNC, UCSD, and Lawrence.
Both teams were unable to come up with a team win on the day against the difficult competition.
Senior
Yaroslav Ivanov of men's foil led the men's team individually with eight wins. Freshman
Aaron Dittel continued his strong season in men's epee with seven wins and fellow freshman
Austin Carlisle from men's sabre posted six wins. Sophomore
Jacob Theut of men's epee also provided wins for Detroit capturing five on the day.
Senior
Eva Berndt of women's sabre led the women's team as she posted seven wins on the day. Classmate
Paige Zmudczynski of women's epee also helped out Detroit's win total with six individual victories.
The next competition for the Detroit fencing teams will come this Saturday in South Bend, Indiana. The Titans will compete at the Notre Dame Duals hosted by Notre Dame.
