Titans Fall to Ohio State in Season Opener

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio (2/7/2014) -- Senior Erin Campbell had three goals but the Ohio State Buckeyes overwhelmed the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team by a 18-3 score in the season opener Friday indoors at the Leo Yassenoff Field at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Junior goalkeeper Lexie McCormick made 14 saves for Detroit while grabbing four ground balls. Sophomore defender Ally Shrader also had four ground balls and junior defender Amanda Guthrie had four as well to lead the Titans.

The sixth year of UDM (0-1) women's lacrosse started with promise as the Titans controlled possession in the opening minutes of the game throwing the ball all around the Ohio State (1-0) defense. A free position attempt for freshman Kelsi Pritchard followed by a Ohio State yellow card gave UDM a man-up opportunity. Ohio State successfully killed off the penalty and Detroit was tied 1-1 up until 13:13 left in the first half when OSU scored its second goal. Following a timeout, the Buckeyes were able to generate the momentum to close out the half with nine straight goals to go up by a 10-1 score at the break.

"We had good possessions and ball movement when we had the ball, and we made some good stops in the backfield and Lexie had a strong performance for us in the cage," said UDM women's lacrosse head coach Laura Maness. "I saw a lot of positives and the things we need to work on we can break down in practices and prepare for our next game."

Ohio State started the scoring with 21:29 left in the opening half but it was Campbell the senior who tied the game up for Detroit with 15:07 to play as she rolled from the right side of the field and scored her first of the year.

The first half was a lot of OSU possession but the Titans did have a 10-8 edge in ground balls. The Buckeyes had the edge in draw controls, 11-1, and also in shots by a 21-3 margin with 13 shots on goal to three for UDM.

Two goals for Ohio State to start the second half made it a 12-1 game but Campbell responded with a goal. The Buckeyes would score five more before Campbell's third of the day with 4:40 left made it 17-3 with a late goal finalizing the 18-3 total.

Both Detroit and Ohio State finished with 18 ground balls and Detroit was successful on eight of 10 clears.

The next game for Detroit will be Feb. 16 at Louisville with game time scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
