Titan Fencing Competes at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (2/9/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's fencing teams were in action at the Duals at Notre Dame on Saturday. All fencing was held at the Castellan Family Fencing Center on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.
 
The UDM women fenced against Penn State, Ohio State, Wayne State, Northwestern, and the host team from Notre Dame. For the Titans, points came here and there against each of the esteemed fencing programs but all ended in losses but the big win came over Wayne State as Detroit won 14-13. In the win, the sabre team led the way with eight wins over one loss while both the foil and epee teams picked up three wins apiece to reach 14.
 
The men's team came away with two wins as they took down Wayne State 16-11 and also defeated Northwestern 14-13. Detroit also fenced against Penn State, Ohio State, and Notre Dame. The men's sabre squad won 9-0 over Wayne State and 7-2 over Northwestern helping the Titans secure the team victories.
 
Senior Yaroslav Ivanov of men's foil led all Titans with 10 wins on the day. He went 3-0 over Wayne State, and added two wins each over Ohio State, Northwestern, and against Notre Dame. The men's sabre squad combined for 18 wins as freshman Austin Carlisle had seven, sophomore Zaahid Muhammad recorded six, and sophomore Andrew Gibbons added five.
 
Junior Katie Lang led the women's side with five wins, including two against Notre Dame while senior Shannon Canavan added three wins with all of her victories coming over Wayne State.
 
The next team competition for UDM fencing will be March 1-2 as Notre Dame will host the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships.
