Carolin Captures First in Men's 800 Meters

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (2/8/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's indoor track and field team competed at the Youngstown State National Invitational Friday and Saturday. Titan sophomore Joshua Carolin was one of the highlights of the day for the Detroit squad as he came in first of 32 runners in the 800 meters. 
 
Carolin made his way through the field of 32 runners to a time of 1:54.07 and a first place finish in the 800 meters and a new personal-best.
 
The men's team as a whole went 4-1 in its dual meets with a 67-60 win over Bucknell, topping Duquesne 66-61, taking the high road 63-55 over Oakland, and also had a 76-23 win over Pittsburgh with a 75-59 loss to Youngstown State was the lone blemish.
 
The other Titan team events saw the 4x400m freshmen relay team of Brandon Wilks, Joe Harmon, Ilia Panev, and Khalil Parris come in sixth of 16 teams with a combined time of 3:22.93.
 
The men's distance medley relay team of junior Ryan Hofsess (1200m), Wilks (400m), junior Ylli Alla (800m), and anchored by sophomore Derek Gielarowski (1600m) finished at 10:21.41 and in third place.
 
Individually, freshman Dylan Kruis made his debut in the pentathlon and his first event was the 60 meters where he had a time of 7.59. The shot put was the next event and he set a UDM-best, in the heptathlon, with a throw of 11.58m. He also cleared the pole vault with a mark of 2.64m setting a new personal record. Kruis finished up this first pentathlon to total 3739 points and move into No. 3 on the Titan all-time list.
 
Freshman Ilia Panev continued his fine indoor season setting a personal record in the long jump at 6.74m and improving on that with a mark of 6.80m and a third place finish in a field of 26. He was also in the 60 meter hurdIes and was sixth at 8.58, but he was one slight step behind senior Steven Ivanics who ran 8.56 to place fifth in the field of 15 runners.
 
Senior Martin Nelkie made his 2014 indoor track and field debut in the 5000 meter distance run and he set a new indoor personal best of 15:10.73 to place ninth. He was also ninth in the 3000 meters at 8:57.26. Also in the 3000m distance run, Gielarowski set a PR at 8:42.57 and senior Sam Felton as well at 8:58.77 ran a new PR in the race.
 
In the 400 meters, Parris finished third of 32 with a time of 49.28 to move into No. 13 on the all-time Titan list.
 
Senior Charles Anthony ran 22.20 in the 200 meters and Wilks was not far off the mark at 22.62 as the duo finished sixth and seventh respectively.
 
In the mile, two Titans set personal-bests as Hofsess at 4:17.08 and redshirt freshman Austin Wigent at 4:17.66 finished back-to-back with Hofsess in seventh and Wigent right behind in eighth of 27 people.
 
Senior thrower Jeff Sherman improved on his personal best in the shot put with a toss of 15.05m and improved on that mark before his final throw launching 15.42m. The mark converts to 50 feet and 7.75 inches which is good for the No. 4 mark on UDM's all-time record list. He also became just the fifth Titan to break the 50 feet mark.
 
The next competition for Detroit following the weekend will be Fri. Feb. 14-15 as the Titans will participate in the Grand Valley State University Big Meet in Allendale, Michigan.
