SOUTH BEND, Ind. (9/19/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's cross country team had five runners in the top 50 as the Titans took part in a yearly tradition with the 35th Annual National Catholic championships, run on Friday at Notre Dame.
 
The Titans totaled 154 points for sixth place, just behind Marquette's 146, in the 8k event.
 
In his collegiate 8k debut, freshman Ben Kendell once again led the way as he claimed 12th in 25:27, the fastest run by a Titan since Mead Goedert had the same time in 2005.
 
Senior Colin Creagh broke his 8k personal record as he took 24th in 25:51, 10 seconds faster than his time at Notre Dame in 2012.
 
Also making his collegiate 8k debut was sophomore Ryan Leahy and he posted a 26:14 for 36th, while junior Derek Gielarowski was able to pick up a PR by one second placing 41st in 26:22, ahead of his 26:23 time at last year's Horizon League Championship.
 
Senior George Holman crossed the finish line in 26:29 for 46th and senior Ylli Alla was 74th in 27:34.
 
The Titans also had junior Austin Wigent take 80th in 27:48, freshman Miles Kelleher run 28:30 for 86th and junior Joshua Carolin place 87th in 29:14.
 
The Titans will now have an extra week of practice before getting back on the course at the Greater Louisville Classic on Oct. 4.
