Full Results

CEDARVILLE, Ohio (10/31/2015) --
Sophomore Ben Kendell challenged for the league title, but came up just a few seconds short earning runner-up as the University of Detroit Mercy men's cross country team took fifth place at the Horizon League Championship on Saturday.

As a team, Detroit totaled 123 points on the 8k Elvin R. King Cross Country Course in Cedarville, Ohio, the first time the event has ever been hosted there.

Kendell was in the leaders position right from the start and set a career time of 24:41 for second place, just four seconds behind Youngstown State's Austin McLean, but still good enough for All-HL First Team honors. He is the third Titan to earn runner-up following teammate Colin Creagh last season and Titan Hall-Of-Famer Ken Dubois in 1987.

Senior Derek Gielarowski placed 20th in 25:42, while senior Austin Wigent was 21st in 25:53, three seconds short of a personal record.

The Titans will now get ready for another postseason race as they run in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship on Friday, Nov. 13, held at the University of Wisconsin.

THE FINISH LINE
QUOTE OF THE RACE
  • "Ben (Kendell) did a tremendous job and was basically at the front the entire race. YSU's Mclean is a big kicker, but Ben made him earn it." - Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Guy Murray '89

RUNNER-UP AGAIN
  • For the second-straight season, the Titans had a runner finish in second place as sophomore Ben Kendell took the honors.
  • Kendell now joins teammate Colin Creagh in 2014 and Titan Hall-Of-Famer Ken Dubois in 1987 as the highest Detroit harriers at the race as the red, white and blue are still looking for its first individual winner.

KENDELL KEEPS IT UP
  • Sophomore Ben Kendell posted a career time of 24:41, just four seconds off the lead.
  • The run eclipsed his time of 24:46 at the Greater Louisville Classic a few weeks ago.
  • It was also the second-straight season that he has earned All-HL as he was the conference's Freshman of the Year taking fifth last season.

RACE WRAP-UP
  • "We ran well, but unfortunately, we couldn't make up for all the injuries and missed training time in the last year. The Horizon League is as good as ever with a lot of high-level performers and solid teams." - Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Guy Murray '89

UP NEXT
  • The Titans will gear up for another race with the annual NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship, hosted by Wisconsin at the Zimmer National Cross Country Course on Nov. 13.
