BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. (2/8/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse squad scored early and often Sunday morning on its way to a 19-7 exhibition win over Western Ontario at Detroit Country Day High School.
The Titans scored six goals in the first six minutes of the contest to lead 6-0. Detroit would eventually score 15 first-half goals to lead the Mustangs at halftime, 15-3. Eleven Titans in all scored goals during the game.
Junior
Kylie Birney scored four goals to lead the Titans. Freshman
Jessica Snyder and sophomore
Julie Castner each added two goals and one assist. Junior
Michaela Schwartz had four points total (one goal, three assists).
Senior
Tessa Keuler, sophomore
Lauren Sharkey and junior
Jenna Payne each tallied two goals, while senior
Annie Mendoza finished with three points (one goal, two assists) for Detroit. Sophomores
Annelise Niermann and
Kelsi Pritchard, along with freshman
Jordyn Beam also tallied goals for Detroit.
Detroit had 22 shots in the first half and had the advantage in the game overall, 28-17. The Titans also led in draw controls (16-13) and ground balls (16-13). Mendoza led the Titans with four draw controls, while freshman
Emma Mucci paced Detroit with three ground balls. Freshman
Taylor Spray also had two of the five caused turnovers for UDM.
Senior
Lexie McCormick made four saves between the pipes. Freshman
Julia Darroch had two stops in the second half for the Titans.
The Titans (0-1) return to the field Sunday, Feb. 15 for a 12 p.m. match at No. 10-ranked Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
