PONTIAC, Mich. (3/4/2015) -- Sophomore
Jason Weber broke his own school record with 28 saves and eight Titans netted goals on the afternoon as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team scored a 12-7 victory over Mercer on Wednesday at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac.
Weber's 28 saves breaks his mark of 23 he had last year in a win over Marist and appears to tie a MAAC single-game record with 28 that Dan Morrissey of St. Joseph's had against Delaware on Feb. 14, 2004.
The victory moved Detroit to 4-2 on the season, the first time in the program's seven years that it has been two games above .500. Mercer fell to 0-4 on the year.
Senior
Shayne Adams led the way with a season-high three goals and four points, his 21st career hat trick. Freshman
Mark Anstead tallied two goals and an assist and senior
Mike Birney recorded two goals.
Detroit opened the scoring as Anstead had an unassisted marker nearly five minutes into the game, but the Bears would jump ahead, 2-1, with 6:37 left in the first. Junior
Andy Hebden then knotted it at 2-2 with his first of the season late in the period and that started a 3-0 run for the red, white and blue.
Anstead picked up his assist finding senior
Scott Drummond for a tally early in the second and then he finished his scoring on the day with another unassisted goal for a 4-2 lead with 7:58 left in the half.
The two teams traded goals the rest of the period as
Mike Birney had his first goal at the 3:52 mark, while Adams got on the board with 13 seconds remaining for a 6-4 advantage at the break.
At that point, Weber had 12 saves and the Titan defense saw Mercer turn the ball over seven times.
Weber then kept Mercer at bay in the third coming up with nine saves in the frame as the Bears made a run at the lead, scoring the lone goal in the period to make it a 6-5 game.
With Weber stopping the Mercer attack, Detroit started to pull away in the fourth as senior
Brandon Beauregard found Adams and he beat the goalie with 13:32 on the clock. Nearly 20 seconds later off a faceoff victory by junior
Damien Hicks, sophomore
Kyle Beauregard scooped up the ground ball and he fired one in for his fifth of the season and a 9-5 lead.
Mercer would get one back, but
Mike Birney then blasted one in for a score at the 11:58 mark to make it 9-6. Weber made four more saves in the next seven minutes, with his final two the school record stops of 24 and 25 on the day. After his 25th save, Adams recorded his third goal to push the lead to 10-6 with 4:53 to go.
The score was 10-7 with 4:23 remaining when Weber stopped his final two shots of the day and
Brandon Beauregard put the contest away taking a pass from Hebden and netting a goal for an 11-7 lead at the 1:05 mark. UDM added a man-up goal late as Adams found freshman
Jeff Fernandes and the Canadian rookie notched his second marker of the season.
Junior
Paul Bitetti had two caused turnovers to lead the Titan defense. Senior
Chris Shevins had a season-high four ground balls and Weber also posted four GB's.
Detroit was outshot, 47-37, and Mercer led the ground ball battle, 42-25.
After playing three games in six days, the Titans will now get a much needed break as they will have 10 days off before playing at Air Force next Saturday, March 14.
