Women's NCAA Regional Results: Epee | Foil | Sabre
EVANSTON, Ill. (3/7/2015) -- Eight members of the University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's fencing teams competed Saturday at the 2015 NCAA Midwest Fencing Regionals, held on the campus of Northwestern University.
Five fencers competed for Detroit on the men's side, while three fenced for the women's squad in the last event of the season.
Senior
Yaroslav Ivanov earned six bout victories in the men's foil competition, but was forced to retire with just two bouts left due to an injury. He had a 6-5 record, which included a 5-4 win over Ohio State's Chris Colley, who finished fourth overall in the foil.
Three men's fencers represented Detroit out of the 14 overall in the sabre. Sophomore
Austin Carlisle placed 10th overall as UDM's top finisher in the event. It marked his second straight season inside the top 10 at the NCAA Midwest Regional. Carlisle went 3-10 in pool play with 31 touches and a -24 indicator.
Junior
Brock Bendes tallied two bout victories and senior
Timothy Maley had one bout win in their NCAA Midwest Regional debuts. Bendes finished 12th in the regional, while Maley finished 14th.
Sophomore
Aaron Dittel placed 11th in the epee for the second straight year at the regional tournament. Dittel earned went 5-8 in pool play and had an indicator of -19 (37 touches scored, 56 touches received). His victories included a 5-3 victory over Cleveland State's Paul Duchow.
Detroit had two fencers in the women's epee. Senior
Kaylah Berndt and junior
Roby Wong both competed in the weapon, finishing 14th and 15th, respectively. Berndt earned three bout victories and had a record of 3-13 overall with a -29 indicator (39 touches scored, 68 touches received). Wong tallied two victories for the Titans in the epee and finished with a record of 2-14. She had an indicator of -31 (39 touches scored, 70 touches received).
In her first NCAA Midwest Regional, sophomore
McKenna Brohl placed 13th in the sabre in her first NCAA Midwest Regional. Senior
Katie Lang was unable to compete in the regionals.
"They all fenced responably well," head coach
Todd Dressell said. They all pretty much did their jobs. It was disappointing that Katie couldn't come and that Ivan was fencing so well and then had to withdraw. I think everyone did their job and we're looking forward to next season."
The Detroit fencing team banquet is set for April 12 in the Titan Club Room in Calihan Hall.
