ROCHESTER, Mich. (5/2/2015) -- University of Detroit Mercy junior
Aisha Potts-Tyre entered Saturday's competition at the Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships in front of the pack in the heptathlon and didn't relinquish that lead, capturing the title in the combined event at Oakland University.
Potts-Tyre's win in record-breaking fashion in the heptathlon highlighted the action Saturday for the Titans. Detroit stands fourth after day two of three at the championships with 38 points, just 11 points shy of second place Valparaiso. Youngstown State leads with a total of 88 points, while Wright State is third with 42 points.
It was a two-athlete battle for the heptathlon title between Potts-Tyre and Wright State's Brittany Jones. Potts-Tyre finished second in the long jump and won the javelin before finishing sixth in the 800-meter run Saturday to wrap up the title.
She earned 4,659 points, breaking the school record, and finishing 54 points ahead of Jones. She achieved a new personal record by 614 points.
Detroit swept the titles in the combined events this season as senior
Hana Hunt won the pentathlon title at the Horizon League Indoor Championships.
Sophomore
Ashley Bayles finished fourth in the shot put one day after winning the discus. Bayles placed fourth with a toss of 13.37 meters (43' 10.5"). Senior
Lauren Berlin earned a new PR in the shot put and finished seventh with a throw of 12.63 meters (41' 5.25").
Junior
Allison Garner sped her way to the 200-meter finals after a blistering pace in the preliminaries. Garner set a new PR by 0.33 seconds, finishing fourth in qualifying with a time of 25.01. Detroit freshman
Brogan Holmes also qualified for Sunday's finals with a PR of 25.54, and freshman
Alyson Hamilton earned a PR in the event with a time of 26.55.
Garner also set a new career time in the 100-meter dash prelims, finishing second in 12.13. She'll be the No. 2 seed for the finals on Sunday. Holmes qualified for the finals after taking seventh with a time of 12.74. Hamilton was just behind in 12.83.
Senior Zaynib Baydoun was fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the Titans with a time of 11:43.25, while senior
Sara Taylor finished the steeplechase in 12:30.19.
Shannon Marchant qualified for the 800-meter run finals on Sunday after finishing in fifth during Saturday's preliminaries, clocking a time of 2:16.61. Freshman
Sydnie Fetherolf (2:21.79) and junior
Haley Morairty (2:28.20) also ran in the 800m for Detroit.
Sophomore
Jayona Dent qualified for the 400-meters finals on Sunday with a time of 59.29. Freshman
Elizabeth Mullen finished just outside the top eight placing 10th with a time of 1:00.55.
Potts-Tyre finished ninth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.25), while junior
Grace Battista (16.38) and sophomore
Paige Anderson (17.14) posted good times in the event for Detroit. Potts-Tyre was also ninth in the long jump finals, reaching 5.07 meters (16' 7.75").
The final day of competition will begin at 10:00 a.m., on Sunday at Oakland.
